Soma Yoga Norfolk Natalie Jobanputra in Gomukhasana

natalie jobanputra

I’ve been practising Yoga for over 20 years and teaching since 2006, including seven years as a full-time teacher in Edinburgh, London and Kent.  I relocated to Norfolk four years ago to start a family and am now excited to be returning to teaching after this life-altering break.

Yoga came to me during a particularly challenging period of my life when I was struggling with anxiety and depression. I saw my brother, recently returned from a  trip to India, practising a series of postures and was instantly mesmerised by the the aura of calm, grace and focus he emitted. Inspired, I started a daily practice, teaching myself with books and videos.  Yoga didn’t ‘fix’ my problems but it did offer me an instant refuge from my troubled mind.  The simple tool of breath synchronised movement brought me into the present moment and allowed me to feel at home in my own body for the first time since early childhood.

I’ve explored many ‘styles’ of Yoga since those early days, including Ashtanga, Iyengar and Sivananda.  My curiosity and thirst for knowledge and experience took me to India where, over the course of several trips, I spent a total of two years learning Yoga and meditation and living, working and teaching in ashrams.  My practice has constantly evolved over the years but for me the core principle of allowing the mind to become quiet by dropping into the sensations of the breathing, moving body remains unchanged.

In recent years I’ve become increasingly interested in the therapeutic uses of Yoga and movement practices especially when it comes to understanding how the body and nervous system respond to stress and trauma.  The combination of taking a break from teaching, becoming a mother, moving into middle age and the pandemic has provided me with a much needed opportunity to reassess how and why I practice Yoga. Thanks to online access to some of the most gifted and knowledgeable movement teachers in the world, this period has been for me the biggest catalyst for transformation, growth and healing.

I’ve recently completed a year long in-person training in Hanna Somatics with Lisa Petersen, making me one of only a tiny handful of qualified Somatics teachers in the East of England. Somatics has helped me heal from chronic pain and has transformed the way I practice and teach Yoga and approach life. I now feel a strong calling to share some of the insights I’ve started to gain in a practice that is firmly grounded in the busy day-to-day reality of modern life. I look forward to seeing you on the mat.
